Unit VI Article Review Summary The New/Old Terrorism, an article by Jeffery Kaplan (2011) discusses the United States the ramifications to the Terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 on the World Trade Center in New York. The article notes that the use of explosives to accomplish acts of terrorism is nothing new, and looks at the history of terrorism in the world. Kaplan explains rift in academia between Georgetown University professor Bruce Hoffman director of the Center for Peace and Security Studies at its School of Foreign Service and Marc Sageman, a senior fellow at the Foreign Research Institute with a background in intelligence. Hoffman contended that Osama bin Laden, while still alive, and Al-Qaeda were in control of the terrorist network responsible for the carnage of 9/11. Sageman viewed Al-Qaeda as a bunch of guys and the claimed the real enemies of America were pockets jihadists and extremists and were essentially a leaderless resistance. Main Points Kaplan reviews four waves of terrorism from history. The Anarchist Wave was the first and included terror for the greater good. In began in 1878 and lasted until the First World War. The Anti-Colonial wave began in 1919 as a result of the disappointment of the colonized world with the outcome of the Treaty of Versailles and ran until the Second World War. The leftist wave was a reaction to the Vietnam War and in time faded away as the issue grew non-relevant.
